Chapter 28

“To climb steep hills requires slow pace at first.”

Rehearsal began at the top of act one. I was in the first scene with Anna, who is excited and happy when Howard tells her about her arranged marriage. It went quickly with the cuts and pacing. I said my lines on the heels of Howard and Anna’s last words, which helped even more. It sounded natural and it was a way experienced actors shortened the running time.

At the end of the scene, Howard and I stood center stage and watched Anna. Her character runs singing up the Victorian staircase. She twirls at the top and then exits through the black velour upstage traveler onto the platform behind and down the fateful ladder steps.

All went well and we exited into the wings in a blackout.
